As Reformed Church Home celebrates National Assisted Living Week, September 13–19, we embrace this year’s theme, “Shining Through the Years.”
Although the national observance focuses on Assisted Living, its message extends naturally throughout the RCH continuum of care—including Skilled Nursing. Cherished memories, life achievements, and meaningful relationships remain essential at every stage of life and throughout every level of support.
Some residents transition to Skilled Nursing after living in Assisted Living. Their needs may change, but the heart of who they are does not. They continue to carry their familiar stories, spiritual traditions, personal preferences, treasured relationships, and the wisdom gathered across a lifetime.
The continuity between Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing can make that transition more reassuring. Familiar surroundings, recognizable faces, established friendships, and a shared culture of compassionate care help residents and families feel that they remain part of the RCH community.
Skilled Nursing care attends to complex health and personal needs, but caring for the whole person involves much more. It means knowing the music that brings someone joy, the memories that invite a smile, the accomplishments that create pride, and the family traditions that continue to provide comfort and meaning.
It also means recognizing that meaningful connections do not stop when care needs increase. A conversation with a caregiver, a family visit, a shared prayer, a favorite activity, or a quiet moment of companionship can illuminate an entire day.
National Assisted Living Week gives us a special opportunity to celebrate the bridges connecting Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. These bridges are built from relationships, trust, shared experiences, and the promise that residents will continue to be known and valued as individuals.
