Enjoying Laughter Reminiscing

June is a beautiful time of year at Reformed Church Home. The longer days, warm breezes, and arrival of summer invite us outdoors to reconnect with family, friends, and neighbors. It is also a meaningful season to honor the fathers and father figures who continue to enrich our lives with their stories, wisdom, humor, and caring hearts.

In Assisted Living, Father’s Day often becomes more than a single celebration. It becomes a season of reminiscing — sharing memories of raising families, working hard, serving others, coaching little league teams, attending graduations, fixing things around the house, or simply being present during important moments in life.

Many residents especially enjoy summer visits outdoors this time of year. Sitting together with iced tea on the patio, enjoying conversation under the sunshine, or making a simple phone or virtual call can create moments that feel both comforting and joyful. Families are encouraged to think creatively about visits — bringing along favorite old photographs, music from younger years, a favorite dessert, or even sharing a family recipe or memory that sparks laughter and storytelling.

Our staff also recognizes that Father’s Day can hold many emotions. Some residents are fathers themselves. Others remember beloved husbands, brothers, sons, uncles, or dear friends. Through activities, conversation, and compassionate support, we strive to create an atmosphere where every resident feels connected, valued, and remembered.

As summer begins, we look forward to many more shared moments of sunshine, conversation, friendship, and heartfelt connection throughout our community.

Sally L., the daughter of one of our assisted living residents, recently shared these thoughts:

“I appreciate all that the staff does to support my father. He has always been a strong, hardworking, and respectful man — someone who put family above all else. My dad isn’t a man of many words, but his actions have always spoken clearly.

He taught us patience long before I truly understood its value, especially during the quiet hours we spent fishing together. I learned resilience by watching him work, and my love of staying active — from swimming to biking — comes directly from his example. His kindness and love helped shape the person I am today, and I appreciate him more than he will ever know.

Words cannot fully express our gratitude for Reformed Church Home. From the very first day my father moved in, the staff has been welcoming, patient, and professional. They keep our family informed about his well-being and daily life, giving us tremendous peace of mind. We are so grateful for the care he receives, and our family is thankful every day that we chose RCH.”
